Foodchain Battles | Flies vs. Shrimps

Great Salt Lake is an ecological treasure and a vital resource for Utah's wildlife. The brine flies (Ephydra gracilis ) and the brine shrimps (Artemia salina) at Great Salt Lake are the primary aquatic food sources for the 10 million migratory birds, such as the Wilson’s phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor), that visit the lake annually. These species are under threat as lake levels drop, and Great Salt Lake Institute is working to learn the impacts of lower lake levels and higher salinity levels on these creatures.

Your gift to Great Salt Lake Institute supports this research, as well as clear science communication to the public in an effort to preserve this fragile ecosystem. This year, we’re spotlighting the food chain and asking: will the food pyramid topple? Join us for a friendly competition, Shrimp versus Flies, and help protect the creatures that rely on the lake’s unique environment. Together, we can ensure the survival of the Great Salt Lake’s food chain for generations to come.

Salt Lake City Garden Club will donate $500 when Great Salt Lake Institute receives it's first 50 donations.

**Please note: We appreciate every gift and all levels of participation. Gifts made in quick succession will be counted as a single donation. Thank you for your support!
